Isaias strengthens toward Gulf landfall · Hormuz attacks spread beyond strait · Kyiv blackouts after deadly strikes
Risk stays high into Friday, Oct 9. Hurricane Isaias is strengthening toward northern Gulf landfall tonight or early Saturday, tanker attacks have spread outside Hormuz, and Russian strikes left Kyiv with power and water cuts.
United States: At 4 AM CDT, NHC put Isaias near 110 mph about 200 miles SSE of the Mississippi River mouth, moving NNE at 15 mph. It may briefly become a major hurricane this morning before landfall in the warning area tonight or early Saturday. Hurricane warnings run from Ocean Springs, MS to the Bay/Gulf County line in Florida; storm surge warnings cover the Mississippi mouth to the Suwannee River, with 5–7 ft possible from Dauphin Island to Indian Pass. Rain of 4–8 inches (locally 15) is expected across southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend.
Middle East: Tanker attacks around Hormuz hit a wartime weekly high, and UKMTO reported a tanker struck north of Qatar on Wednesday—the first attack there in months—plus a fire reported off Fujairah. Iran is reviewing a U.S. reply to a plan that would reopen Hormuz within seven days; President Trump said talks are productive and ruled out strikes before the Nov. 3 midterms. Houthis escalated strikes on Saudi Arabia toward energy sites and Riyadh airport.
Ukraine: Russian drones on Oct. 8 killed four and injured about 19 in Kyiv, cutting power and straining water. Overnight into Oct. 9 Russia launched 136 drones; Ukraine says it downed or jammed 114, while warehouses near Bucha were hit. Ukrainian drones also struck Russian oil refineries and a major Yandex data center.
Energy: Brent settled near $104 Thursday then eased around $103 Friday. About 1.3 million b/d—roughly 63% of U.S. Gulf oil output—is shut in ahead of Isaias.
For USL readers: on the Gulf Coast from southeast Louisiana through the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend, finish storm prep this morning, know your evacuation zone, and follow local officials. Elsewhere, expect fuel-price swings and keep basic supplies topped off.
