Trump rejects Hormuz reopen plan · Ukraine hit again · Europe energy crunch
Three theaters stay hot into Sept 27. Hormuz reopen talk collapsed into a public rejection; Russia kept striking Ukrainian cities overnight; Europe’s diesel and gas squeeze keeps tightening.
Middle East: Iran’s seven-day roadmap to reopen the Strait of Hormuz was publicly rejected by President Trump on Saturday; Tehran says it is still waiting for a formal answer through mediators and insists its conditions stand. The waterway that normally carries about a fifth of global oil and gas has stayed far below peacetime traffic since the February war. Oman continues to urge dialogue; shipping remains the binding constraint, not summit language.
Ukraine: Overnight into Sept 27 Russia launched about 170 attack drones (Air Force: ~147 neutralized). Hits were recorded at 18 locations; Odesa Oblast took a mass strike on port and civilian infrastructure. Authorities reported at least 14 killed and 57 injured across Ukraine over the past day. Ukraine’s week-long refinery campaign (Perm, Novoshakhtinsk, Ilsky and others) continues to cut into Russian fuel output. No ceasefire.
Europe / US energy: EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen warned member states of a linked price and supply crisis and urged demand restraint ahead of winter; EU gas storage sits roughly 70% full, well below last year. Retail diesel in the EU has been printing 2026 highs (IRU: ~€2.26/L mid-September). US on-highway diesel remains near record levels; a reported idea of curbing US diesel exports would hit Europe hardest, since US cargoes have filled much of the gap left by Middle East and Russian product losses.
For USL readers: keep plans current, watch diesel and shipping costs, avoid panic buys. Official reopen talk still outruns tanker traffic.
